We Feed What Our Heart Craves

Topic: Heart
Passage: Proverbs 15:12–15

Commentary

Since God can see into Hell and knows what is going on there, surely He can see into the human heart (v.11). He knows our motives, thoughts and desires. A scorner has no love for one who rebukes him; neither will he go to the wise for counsel (v. 12). Happiness and depression are issues of the heart (v. 13). What we are inwardly has more to do with our emotional state than our circumstances. A burdened heart comes from trying to carry our own sorrows and daily cares and failing to turn them over to Him who delights in bearing them for us.
We become like that which we feed on and we feed on what our hearts crave  (v. 14). A person who has discernment seeks knowledge of good things while the fool feeds on foolish things. That is why we need to be very careful in what we read and what we watch on T.V. It isn’t any wonder that so many Christians never grow much spiritually and even suffer from moral and spiritual breakdown.
Those possessed by a merry heart see evidences of God’s love and faithfulness however, those depressed see dismal events that increase by the day. Those who enjoy life in spite of the circumstances have a continual feast (v. 15).

Application

The condition of our heart governs what comes into our home in the way of literature and television viewing. I have always tried to protect my family from the influence of the evil one? This is accomplished by using the on and off button of the TV and screening all the books and magazines.

Proverbs 15:12– 15 (NET)

12 The scorner will not love one who corrects him; he will not go to the wise.

13 A joyful heart makes the face cheerful, but by a painful heart the spirit is broken.

14 The discerning mind seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on folly.

15 All the days of the afflicted are bad, but one with a cheerful heart has a continual feast.

Illustration: Try Doing it With The Engine Running

Morris, the loudmouth mechanic, was removing the cylinder heads from the motor of a car when he spotted a famous heart surgeon who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his Mercedes. Morris shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc! Is dat you? Come on ova’ here a minute.” The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where Morris the mechanic was working on the car. Morris straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag, and asked argumentatively, “So, Mr. Fancy Doctor, look at dis here work. I ALSO open hearts, take valves out, grind ’em, put in new parts, and when I finish dis baby will purr like a kitten. So how come you get da big bucks, when you an’ me is doing basically da same work?” The surgeon leaned over and whispered to Morris, “Try doing it with the engine running.” (Source Unknown).
