The Day of The Lord
August 11, 2021
Commentary
Not only were these Thessalonian believers concerned about what would happen to their loved ones who died before the Lord’s return, but they wanted to know something about when this event which Paul had been speaking of would occur. He tries to show them that there are more important aspects to the coming of the Lord than exactly when it will happen (v. 1). “The times and the seasons” refers to the knowledge of what will happen in the future, specifically to the return of Christ. He then proceeds to tell them about “the day of the Lord” which begins immediately after the Rapture of the Church.
The method – (verses 2-3). It will come as a surprise to those on the earth at the time. It will be like a thief breaking into a home. It will happen when world conditions appear to be calm. Men will be saying “peace and safety” when the day overtakes them. While the people are assuring themselves and each other that all is well, sudden destruction will come on them. Destruction is not annihilation but utter and hopeless ruin. The message – (verses 4-11). Unbelievers are not alert to spiritual things. They are asleep spiritually and controlled by forces outside themselves, like someone who is drunk. On the other hand Christians should not be surprised by the dawning of “the day of the Lord” as they have been told it is coming. They should be watchful and self-controlled as they wait for this event to happen. This truth should bring encouragement to all Christians everywhere in all periods of time.
Application
Since I do not know when the Lord will return for His people, I need to live in a constant attitude of watching and waiting, while I am busy working and witnessing.
1 Thessalonians 5:1– 11 (NET)
1 Now on the topic of times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. 2 For you know quite well that the day of the Lord will come in the same way as a thief in the night. 3 Now when they are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would. 5 For you all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of the darkness. 6 So then we must not sleep as the rest, but must stay alert and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But since we are of the day, we must stay sober by putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet our hope for salvation. 9 For God did not destine us for wrath but for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep we will come to life together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing.
