God’s Promises Are Secure

Passage: Psalms 89:1–18

March 2, 2024

Commentary

This psalm was written to describe the glorious reign of David. This reveals God’s promise to make David the mightiest king on earth and to keep his descendants on the throne forever (II Samuel 7:8-16). Even though Jerusalem was destroyed, and kings no longer reign there, this passage of Scripture can only look forward prophetically to the future reign of Jesus Christ.
God can be counted on to keep His promises. This Psalm expresses confidence and concern over the Lord’s covenant with David. The writer sought to motivate the Lord to answer his prayer by rehearsing the covenant promises. This is a study of the age-old conflict between the promises of a faithful, loving God, and the catastrophes that often occur.
    1. The actual Significance of the Covenant (vv:1-4)
A. The principal involved (vv. 1,2) – Mercy and faithfulness.
B. The people involved (v. 3) – The Lord and David
C. The promise involved (v. 4)- “Thy seed will I establish forever” II Sam 7:12
    2. The absolute Security of the Covenant (vv. 5-18)
A. God’s power in heaven (vv. 5-8) – Every created being is subservient to the      Lord.
B. God’s power in history (vv. 9-18) – His power is revealed in his creation.
This scene shows how righteousness, justice, mercy, and truth are the foundation of God and His  throne. They are the fundamental aspects of the way God rules. I need to make sure that my actions flow out of His intentions. In our day contracts are no longer taken very seriously. Legal loopholes are found and exercised every day. Marriage vows are violated and families ripped apart. Promises between friends are broken. Regardless of how many times people will fail us and break their promises, we can be sure that God will never break His promises to us.

Application
