Discipline Brings Quality to Life
January 28, 2022
Commentary
The person who has discipline in his life is an example of one who has a meaningful life whereas those who refuse to learn from discipline cause others to stumble. A person’s conduct affects not only himself but others as well, either favorably or unfavorably (vv. 17-18). It is only when a person learns that he cannot trust himself but that he must rely completely upon the Lord and His Word that his feet will walk in the way of life. There should be more concern in Christians today about evil speaking (v. 18).The tales may be true but that does not excuse us to repeat them. In His Word over and over again in unmistakable terms He has expressed His hatred about evil-speaking.
A warning is given that constant talking will lead to sin. To control our lips is often difficult but it is a part of true wisdom (v.19). A man of God should weigh his words, remembering that for every idle word he must give an account (Ecclesiastes 5:1-7). In contrast to the destructive talk of the wicked the words of the righteous are uplifting and to be valued like choice silver (v. 20). Many are helped by useful instruction, but fools will die with their own stupidity (v. 21. When the LORD blesses you with riches, you have nothing to regret (v.22). Fools enjoy doing wrong, but the godly will enjoy acting wisely (v. 23). What evil people dread most will happen to them, but good people will often get what their heart desires (v. 24).
Application
As people watch my life are they challenged to live for the Lord or do they say, “If that is what a Christian is, I don’t want to be one?” More people are watching my life than I realize and one day I will give an account for the way I live.
Proverbs 10:17– 24 (NET)
17 The one who heeds instruction is on the way to life, but the one who rejects rebuke goes astray.
18 The one who conceals hatred utters lies, and the one who spreads slander is certainly a fool.
19 When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise.
20 What the righteous say is like the best silver, but what the wicked think is of little value.
21 The teaching of the righteous feeds many, but fools die for lack of sense.
22 The blessing from the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow to it.
23 Carrying out a wicked scheme is enjoyable to a fool, and so is wisdom for the one who has discernment.
24 What the wicked fears will come on him; what the righteous desire will be granted.
