Needing to Know Basic Bible Doctrine

Topic: Doctrine

Commentary

Peter states that his goal in life is to use every opportunity to instruct others in the faith. One important function of any Christian leader is to remind his followers of basic Bible doctrine. Sad to say, many Christians are ignorant of these things and therefore do not live by them. Sadder yet are believers who know the truth but still do not live by it. Peter’s intent was to stir up the brethren. Perhaps his exhortation and reason for urgency is because of his realization that death was near. It is thought that he was imprisoned in Rome at this time and knew his death was imminent.
Peter says, “My friends, you must do all you can to show that God has really chosen and selected you (v. 10). If you keep on doing this, you won’t stumble and fall. Then our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you a glorious welcome into his kingdom that will last forever (v. 11). You are holding firmly to the truth that you were given (v. 12). But I am still going to remind you of these things. In fact, I think I should keep on reminding you until I leave this body (v. 13). And our Lord Jesus Christ has already told me that I will soon leave it behind” (v. 14).

Application

I need to know what I believe and why I believe it when it comes to basic bible doctrine II Tim. 3:16. I need to be “ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh” (I Peter 3:15).

2 Peter 1:10– 14 (NET)

10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin. 11 For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you.

12 Therefore, I intend to remind you constantly of these things even though you know them and are well established in the truth that you now have. 13 Indeed, as long as I am in this tabernacle, I consider it right to stir you up by way of a reminder, 14 since I know that my tabernacle will soon be removed, because our Lord Jesus Christ revealed this to me.
