The Rewards of Meditation

Topic: Meditation
Passage: 1 Timothy 4:11–16

Commentary

Paul shares five things that a good Christian leader needs to be disciplined in:
      1.   Being a good example (vv. 11-12)
      2.   Reading (v. 13)
      3.   Exhorting (v. 13)
      4.   Exercising your gift (v. 14)
      5.   Meditating on the word of God (v. 15)
      6.   Keeping a close watch on how you live and on what you teach (v. 16).
Some of the rewards of meditation are:
      1.   Good success (Joshua 1:8)
      2.   Wiser than our enemies (Psalm 119:97-98)
      3.   More understanding than all your teachers (Psalm 119:99)
      4.   Joy, health, and personal fulfillment (Psalm 63:5-6)
      5.   Prosperity in every venture that you undertake (Psalm 1:2-3)
      6.   Success will be obvious for everyone to see (Psalm 1:4-5)

Application

How can I be a good example in what I’m involved in today? (It cannot be without God’s help.) Timothy was to give himself wholly to Paul’s instructions then progress would be seen by all observers. Meditation is centering my thoughts around scripture and prayerfully reviewing the Word of God over and over like a cow chewing her cud. The more I share from my Quiet Time the more I will be thinking on it. It is my desire to share something I learned today with someone else.

1 Timothy 4:11– 16 (NET)

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness, and purity. 13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have, given to you and confirmed by prophetic words when the elders laid hands on you. 15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress. 16 Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
