The Righteous Weighs His Words Carefully
February 28, 2019
Commentary
The righteous man weighs his words carefully rather than blurting out the first thing that comes to his mind while the wicked has no such consideration (v. 28). The wicked speaks whatever comes to his lips and doesn’t worry about what harm it may bring. In fact some people pride themselves on being frank and outspoken when it would be much better if they would be more careful in what they say and thus save offenses and sorrow. Because the Lord hates the wicked He distances Himself from them and refuses to hear them (v. 29). However, He will hear the righteous for He has pledged Himself to hear their prayers (John 15:7). What a privilege and promise this is for those of us who know and love Him.
A cheerful look or a few words of encouragement not only brings joy to the heart but also contributes to physical well being (v. 30). It is only those who hear reproof who get understanding (v. 31). To ignore reproof only shows that the person actually hates himself (v. 32). The fear of the Lord is not only the beginning of knowledge but it also brings wisdom. It is a part of wisdom for us to acknowledge our mistakes and faults and thus “before honor is humility” (v. 33).
Application
It is easy for me to speak before I think and in the process hurt others? I must remember that the righteous man weighs his words carefully rather than blurting out the first thing that comes to mind.
Proverbs 15:28– 33 (NET)
28 The heart of the righteous considers how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
29 The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
30 A bright look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the body.
31 The person who hears the reproof that leads to life is at home among the wise.
32 The one who refuses correction despises himself, but whoever listens to reproof acquires understanding.
33 The fear of the Lord provides wise instruction, and before honor comes humility.
Illustration: Man Thinks He Missed The Rapture
Herbert Washington, whom co-workers at Significant Plastics Inc. say was unduly concerned with the rapture and the second coming of Christ, suffered a serious heart attack when those he worked with pretended they’d been caught away without him. They laid work outfits on their chairs and hid in a supply room, and when Herbert came back from the restroom, he thought the rapture had occurred. The janitor, an outspoken Muslim, pretended to have witnessed everyone disappear and ran around the office feigning panic. Herbert fell to the ground clutching his heart and screaming, “I knew you’d forget me, Jesus! What did I do wrong?” He was taken to a local hospital. The employees emerged, sobered, from the supply room and gathered up their extra clothes. “We didn’t mean to scare him to death,” said one woman. “He’s just always talking about it, so today we decided to turn the tables on him.” Washington underwent bypass surgery and is recovering well and “digging into the Bible like never before,” says his wife.
