Paul Held Great Esteem For Epaphroditus
July 23, 2020
Commentary
Another shining example of Servanthood was Epaphroditus who also had a deep concern for his friends at Philippi (vv. 25-30). Since the church had sent Epaphroditus to bring gifts and money to Paul they probably intended for him to stay and assist Paul indefinitely. However, Paul choose to send him back to them. Since being in Rome Epaphroditus had suffered an illness where he almost died. Paul praised God for His mercy in restoring Epaphroditus to good health. He knows that the people in Philippi had heard of his illness and was worried about him so he wants them to see that he is ok. He proves to us that the joyful life is the life of sacrifice and service.
This section challenges us to Christ-centered living. It is so easy to seek the things which are our own, and not ‘the things which are of Christ Jesus’. Epaphroditus’ willingness to serve the Lord is readily apparent in these verses. While he is so seriously ill, his thoughts are not for himself but rather for his dear brothers and sisters in Christ in Philippi. Paul wanted the Philippians to receive Epaphroditus with great joy and appreciation for his faithful ministry on their behalf and with gratitude to God for preserving his life. He wants them to esteem him because of his spirit of laying aside his own comfort and convenience for the cause of Christ (v. 30).
Application
Lord help me to not be a person who seeks praise myself but someone who is looking to meet the needs of others and how I can build up their esteem.
Philippians 2:24– 30 (NET)
24 though I am confident in the Lord that I too will be coming to see you soon.
25 But for now I have considered it necessary to send Epaphroditus to you. For he is my brother, coworker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to me in my need. 26 Indeed, he greatly missed all of you and was distressed because you heard that he had been ill. 27 In fact he became so ill that he nearly died. But God showed mercy to him—and not to him only, but also to me—so that I would not have grief on top of grief. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you can rejoice and I can be free from anxiety. 29 So welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, 30 since it was because of the work of Christ that he almost died. He risked his life so that he could make up for your inability to serve me.
