The Dangers of Overconfidence
January 10, 2023
Commentary
In this chapter Paul uses Israel as an example of overconfidence and lack of self-discipline. He reminds the believers who were strong in the faith, that they had better not become overconfident in their ability to overcome temptation. There are dangers to maturity as well as to immaturity, and one of them is overconfidence. They never seem to come to the place in their Christian walk where they are free from temptation. Paul reminded the experienced believers not to become overconfident in their ability to withstand temptation. The five “all’s” in verses 1-4 emphasize the five downward steps in verses 5-10.
The five “all’s”:
1. “under the cloud“ (v. 1) – divine guidance
2. “passed through the sea“ (v. 1) – divine deliverance
3. “baptized unto Moses“ (v. 2) – divine leadership
4. “eat the same spiritual meat“ (v. 3) – divine provision
5. “drink the same spiritual drink“ (v. 4) – divine intervention
God gave Israel Moses, the leader it needed to reach the promised land. Israel partook of the food and water that God provided. He took care of their day-to-day necessities. However, what happened to most of the people is tragic. There were over two million Jews who stepped out to follow God to the promised land but only two made it.
Application
Thank you, Lord, for giving to me an escape route from any temptation that may come my way. I must never become overconfident in my own strength but always trust in the Lord to deliver me.
1 Corinthians 10:1– 5 (NET)
1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they were all drinking from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5 But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were cut down in the wilderness.
