Commentary

This passage gives us a beautiful example of New Testament follow-up. Paul shows us how to raise baby Christians. He considered himself a “spiritual father” to the believers at Thessalonica. Paul, Silas and Timothy not only told the Christians at Thessalonica how to live, they showed them how to live. Paul points out three of his duties as the spiritual father:
His work (v. 9). The father works to support his family. Paul made tents and paid his own way even though the Christians at Philippi sent financial help (Phil. 4:15-16).His walk (v. 10). The father lives as a good example to his children. His life was holy – To fulfill the duties God gives. His life was righteous – Refers to integrity, uprightness and behavior. His life was blameless – Couldn’t level any charges and prove it.His words (vv. 11-12). The father teaches the family members how to live. Paul dealt with each of the believers personally (v. 11).Paul encouraged (exhorted) the new believers (v. 11).Paul comforted them which not only made them feel better but to do better (v. 11).Paul charged them which means he testified to them out of his own experience (v. 11).The purpose of this fatherly ministry was that his children (new believers) might “walk worthy of God” (v. 12). Paul ministered to them in a personal way because he was teaching them how to walk.  If we follow these principles we will be able to share the gospel with many people.

Application

Just as I have tried to provide for my children physically, mentally and spiritually I need to look for new believers that I can take under my wing until they are spiritually prepared to stand alone.

1 Thessalonians 2:9– 12 (NET)

9 For you recall, brothers and sisters, our toil and drudgery: By working night and day so as not to impose a burden on any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, as to how holy and righteous and blameless our conduct was toward you who believe. 11 As you know, we treated each one of you as a father treats his own children, 12 exhorting and encouraging you and insisting that you live in a way worthy of God who calls you to his own kingdom and his glory.
